I am selling a collection of antique jewelry and chatelaine items so please check out my other listings, some examples seen in the last photo.
ABOUT:
Antique memento mori reversible carved pendant on silver plated rosary chain with the hanging pendant being the form of a skull on one side and the face of Jesus on the other. This is an authentic antique Victorian era piece that I acquired in France. The silver plated beaded chain is a dark color with tarnish from age. I don't see any hallmarks so I assume it is silver plate. This is not a modern reproduction. This was purchased as a Victorian souvenir from Notre Dame de Suffrage, and is engraved on the back of the cross.
While it may seem a bit morbid to some now, this “Memento Mori,” piece which translates to: “Remember Thy Death,” was traditionally meant to provide a focus for contemplating one’s mortality. As such, it corresponds to a spiritual practice of acknowledging your mortality and thus a reminder to live your life on earth virtuously.
The use of symbolic skulls in rosaries and chaplets dates all the way back to the late middle ages (1050 - 1500). They were particularly popular in Europe with priests, nuns, and monks. But, skulls on rosaries have been used for hundreds of years, and historical art and doctrine supports the use of skulls on the rosary.
The carved piece measures about 13mm top to bottom.
NOTE the chain does not have an opening clasp so it was meant to be carried or worn around the belt and the opening is a bit smallish. When folded double it is about 8.5 inches, so the opening should be around 17 inches. I can not get it over my head so please note that : ) I would think a clasp could be added fairly easily.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are in estate condition. A few discolored areas on the carved piece from age where there is slight browning and a few spots. I have heard that things like regular toothpaste and milk can be used to brush these stains out but as it is an antique piece, it makes it look more authentic in my opinion. Still a sturdy figural piece. The chain and beads are dark with patina from age with a little bit of rust and verdigris here or there. The shield type piece that leads from the chain to the pendant also has some discoloration. Unique piece and still has plenty of years left.
But Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition.
I would be delighted if you'd follow me. Thanks for stopping by!
