Description
I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Please see my other offerings and thanks for stopping by!ABOUT:
Here we have a rare interesting antique Georgian to Victorian piece that seems museum worthy to me because of its age, size and uniqueness. It is really a statement piece. The central rectangular pendant part is set with 13 rose cut garnets over a gold washed textured background. The reverse is also reticulated with an ornate swirling design. The piece has 9 chains that connect to a buckle / clip which clips into the pendant on each side. The chains increase slightly in length to allow draping.
I believe the piece is meant to be worn as a choker, so that the chains are all separate and drape towards the bottom, but please NOTE the length - it is 16 inches in length including the large pendant, this is the length of the top shortest chain. My neck is only about 12.5 inches around so it wears lower for me against my décolleté and the chains kind of cluster together instead of fanning out. It still looks awesome, but I've shown it both ways in the photo where I hold it tighter against my neck. It seems it would be pretty straight forward if you were to take it to a jeweler to have some links removed from all the chains to fit you as a choker.
I purchased this piece in Europe and the dealer who sells quite a lot of antique jewelry dated it to the Biedermeier / Georgian era. It really brings the wow factor to any outfit. Would be great for the holidays or even for display, it is quite special.
MEASUREMENTS:
16 inches long when clipped into the pendant. The rectangular pendant measures 2 by 1.5 inches. The largest center garnet is about 4.5mm. It is quite a sturdy piece with a lot of silver, it weighs 87 grams.
HALLMARKS:
It is stamped 835 for solid silver content and has a maker's mark of initials but I could not identify it.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. There is a crack to the silver on one edge of one of the silver buckles, but it still functions well, clips and snaps into place securely. And it is not visible at all when worn but please look for that in photos. As a general rule I would open the necklace from the buckle on the other side just so as not to continuously compress the buckle with the crack. It would be easy to have it soldered by a jeweler as well. There are some nicks to the garnets and scuffs on the facet edges seen under magnification but nothing visible to the naked eye. Some wear to the prongs but all the stones are secure. A few stubborn tarnish spots but it has a nice age appropriate patina in my opinion. But as with all my antique pieces - this is not a mint condition item.
Insurance and signature confirmation upon delivery will be at my cost.
