Sterling Silver Historical Plate 1913 North American Indian Memorial Fort WadsworthDescription
Hello from FANCY ENDEAVOURS (previously savvy*spyglass*treasures)! I am happy you decided to view the wonderful things I am offering. Please do come back to my pages often because I am always on the hunt for more FANCY or not so FANCY products of past human endeavor to offer you!
This is a wonderful American historical antique sterling silver plate with reeded edge by Unger Brothers, Newark, New Jersey. They were in business from 1872 to 1914. This plate is a Presidential presentation to Frank Shively who I found was a Native American of the Crow tribe who served as the Head Football Coach at Washington State College, now Washington State University, from 1898 to 1899. The presentation on the plate reads:
FRANK SHIVELY
FROM
RODMAN WANAMAKER
MEMORIAL
OF THE
FIRST ACT
BY THE
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
IN THE
NATIONAL TRIBUTE
TO THE
NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN
AT FORT WADSWORTH
WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY
1913
There is a great Wikipedia page, with a picture, on the proposed memorial that never was built though President William Howard Taft broke ground on it on George Washington's Birthday in 1913. The Wikipedia page states that the design for the Memorial had a general concept drawn up by Sculptor Daniel Chester French and architect Thomas Hastings. Rodman Wanamaker, of the famous Wanamaker Department Store family spearheaded the project and proposed the privately funded memorial at a banquet that was attended by Buffalo Bill Coty among other notable people. In 1911, Congress set aside the land at Fort Wadsworth for the project. From the Wikipedia page:
"On a rainy Washington's Birthday in 1913, President William Howard Taft broke ground with a silver spade amidst a massive ceremony that included at least two 21-gun salutes from nearby Battery Weed and a naval gunboat. Also in attendance were 32 or 33 American Indian chiefs, including Red Hawk and Two Moons.
It was soon discovered, however, that Wanamaker was not to be the donor of the cost of the project, but rather its chief fundraiser. Very little money was actually raised, and newspapers that were originally supportive now called the project "philanthropic humbug." With the advent of World War I in 1914, enthusiasm for the unfunded project on the site of a harbor defense installation waned. A bronze plaque that marked the site of the ground-breaking was gone by the 1960s at the latest."
Red Hawk and Two Moons, mentioned above, as far as I can tell were witnesses or participated in the Battle of Little Big Horn. This plate, presented to Frank Shively seems to be because he was present at the ground-breaking as part of the Native American contingent. Mr. Shively also has a Wikipedia page but not much more information about him, except what I mention above, is on it.
This wonderful sterling silver presentation plate is a great piece of historical Americana that never was. A museum piece? Maybe. What do you think?
A FANCY treasure you just got to HAVE for yourself or a loved one!
Condition:
The plate has small dents, small bends, and many light scratches. There is tarnish I wasn't able to quite get off. However, it is a wonderful piece of sterling silver with a historical value and interest and is otherwise in very good condition!
Approximate Dimensions:
9 3/4" diameter
This plate weighs about 330 grams of silver. (My scale is very tiny and it was hard to weigh it and see the read-out. So, please realize the weight is not necessarily dead-on accurate).

Why "Fancy Endeavours"?
The name "Fancy Endeavours" came to me as I searched for ways to convey my love for the art and products of human enterprise in a smaller, easy to remember title. From music, architecture, and paintings, to ceramics, jewelry, modes of transportation, clothing and accessories, to the little gadgets you see in "As Seen on TV" ads and everything in between; the things we create and have created in the past to make our lives easier and more beautiful are evidence of free human endeavor and a tangible connection to man's history of advancement.
My previous eBay name "savvy*spyglass*treasures" was inspired by my U.S. Navy experience, love of all things nautical, and by the popularity of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Disneyland ride and the movies. In this name change to "fancyendeavours", I deliberately am using the British spelling version of "endeavor" as homage to the HMS Endeavour, flagship of Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company, in the Pirates movies.
It has become fashionable by some to be disdainful (envious) of the creativity of others....to the point of wishing to eliminate it and turning "profit" into a dirty word. This disturbing trend will not survive. However, I wish to do my part to celebrate and remind anyone who does happen upon my little corner of the internet that without man's creativity, our lives would be bleak and hard beyond imagining. And, really, why shouldn't these talented and creative people, and those like me that find them afterwards, profit from our efforts? The things I am offering for sale here on eBay may or may not all be beautiful or Fancy. However, they were made by their creators for the purpose and intention of making lives (theirs and ours) easier and/or more beautiful. I passionately adore free enterprise in all its forms. I hope you will enjoy these offerings of "Fancy Endeavours" and what they represent!
